“We do not live in fear.” He says, “Father, tell me that we do not live in fear. The books all say that we are equal in the eyes of the law. So, tell me we do not live in fear.” Then his father cried. And as a father, I would cry. “Do they see us all as bad guys? And, when they see us, do they just see another long night – another hard shift on this town’s poorer side. Do they fear us when they see how hard we have to fight just to get by? As if life were a choice between peace or crime… So, they followed me home last night. They pat me down every day, and I don’t think it’s right. They pulled my father naked out of the shower. They pulled my mom out of bed and asked, ‘Why you so sour? Don’t you see that we’re on your side, that we’re trying to help? You’re paying the taxes that put these guns on our belts.’ They didn’t have a warrant, and we’d not the power to fight. This city’s corrupt. The law don’t have my eyes.”
